GENERAL
ABSENTEEISM
- Learners who have been absent from school are required to bring a note signed by their parents, explaining their absence from school. This note must be handed in at the Front Office.
- Learners away from school for 3 days or longer must present a medical certificate on their return to school. This should be handed in at the Front Office.
- If a group test or exam is missed and the learner does not bring a doctor’s certificate on his/her return to school, he/she will be given zero for that test or exam.
-
If it is necessary for a child to leave school during the day for a scheduled appointment, a letter must be handed in at the Front Office or emailed to tracy.stokoe@randparkhigh.co.za and/or rphs@randparkhigh.co.za between 07h00 and 07h30. The time and reason for the child having to leave school must be provided. The learner must then collect a release note from the Front Office by no later than 07h30 or during break.
-
Parents must collect their child at the Front Office at the requested collection time where they will be asked to sign a release form.
-
Intercom announcements will not be made to call learners out of class.
- Learners who become ill during the day should report to the Front Office where the secretaries will assist them.
- Learners MAY NOT phone their parents to be collected from school without permission from the Front Office and they will not be permitted to leave the school premises without a release form being issued by the Front Office.
- Parents are requested not to make appointments for their children during school hours unless absolutely unavoidable.
- When learners miss school, the onus is on them to find out what work was missed and to take the necessary steps to catch up all the work and homework as soon as possible.
- Excessive absenteeism and lateness will result in deregistration.
DISCIPLINE
The school’s Code of Conduct clarifies the principles and values essential to the creation of a healthy educational atmosphere.
Mutual respect, tolerance, courtesy and understanding characterise the Code, which ensures the development of mutually beneficial working relationships between learners and educators. It clearly defines the rights and responsibilities of learners, parents and educators.
The Code was drafted with the assistance of parents, staff and learners in accordance with departmental regulations and is binding on all learners enrolled at the school.
Types of offences and consequent punishments are explained. These range from schedule 1 to schedule 6 offences.
Perpetrators of serious misconduct and/or persistent offenders can expect to attend a disciplinary hearing conducted by the Governing Body, which may result in expulsion.
A copy of the Code of Conduct is available on the school’s website via this link. Parents are advised to familiarise themselves with the Code of Conduct.
The Code of Conduct is upheld in a number of ways:
The Merit System
This computer-based system operates on two levels.
These are issued on an ongoing basis for academic achievement and extramural activities.
These merits accumulate during the year and the current Top 20 Merit earners are issued a merit badge at the end of each term.
The Top Merit earners are awarded certificates and badges at the school’s annual Prize-giving.
Poor work ethic, bad behaviour and more serious misdemeanours are referred to the Grade Tutor in charge of a Grade. The Grade Tutor issues demerits and punishes the learner where necessary.
- Ten demerits result in an afternoon detention.
- Eighty demerits result in an Internal Disciplinary Hearing (IDC).
- Serious misdemeanours may be referred to the Dean of the Grade or directly to an IDC.
Every learner is issued with a Code of Conduct Report at the end of every term. This report details the merits and demerits a learner has accumulated during the term and keeps parents informed of their child’s behaviour.
Internal Disciplinary Hearings(IDC)
An Internal Disciplinary Committee is constituted of a chairperson (the Dean), two educators, two Leaders/RCL Executive, and the Grade Tutor.
Parents are notified by letter that their child has to attend an IDC. The letter will indicate the date and time of the hearing. Parents do not attend the hearing. Learners are expected to report on time and in full school uniform to the Front Office on the day of their hearing. The hearings are formal; minutes are taken and decisions are immediate. The outcome of the meeting is communicated to the parents in writing.
Punishment handed down by an IDC includes, but is not limited to, attendance at the Headmaster’s Detention which takes place on a Friday afternoon from 13h30 – 17h00.
In the case of a very serious offence, the IDC may suggest that the matter be referred to the Governing Body Disciplinary Committee. Parents are expected to accompany their child to a Governing Body Disciplinary Hearing.
COURTESY
We expect our learners to show respect by displaying good manners and being polite when addressing educators, members of the administrative staff and support staff, as well as visitors to the school.
In the classroom, learners are required to:
- Be punctual and prepared for the lesson.
- Respect the work ethic of the classroom by not creating a disturbance or hindering others.
- Obey instructions from the educator.
- Take responsibility for any wrongdoing and its consequences.
The following will not be tolerated:
- No foul language or obscene gestures.

- Movement between classes should be conducted in an efficient and orderly manner. Learners are expected to keep left, to walk in single-file when changing classes and not to block the traffic by standing and chatting to their friends.
CELLULAR PHONES
- Rand Park High permits learners to be in possession of cellular phones at school but does not permit their use during class, unless given permission by an educator and for an educational purpose.
